The problem
Lawyers, litigants and researchers look up cases on eCourts and district court portals many times a day. Every search asks for a captcha first, and a mistyped one clears the form. The work is mundane, and it adds up across hundreds of lookups.
Product vision
Open a court portal and go straight to your search, with the captcha already handled.
Architecture
A content script detects which portal it is on and uses that portal's profile to find the captcha image and input. It sends the image to a small FastAPI service on AWS Lambda, which runs an ONNX text-recognition model and returns the text. The script fills the input and watches for the image to change, so a refreshed captcha is solved again. A popup lets users report a problem, which reaches the team by email through AWS SES.
Engineering challenges
- Every portal renders its captcha differently, as an image or a canvas, with its own fonts and noise.
- Portal markup changes without notice, and the extension has to keep finding the right fields.
- Captchas mix upper and lower case letters, digits and noise, so a single wrong character fails the search.
Performance & optimization
- Each portal has a list of fallback selectors, so one markup change does not break it.
- The model runs on ONNX Runtime on CPU, which keeps the Lambda small and cheap to run.
- The extension asks for no browser permissions beyond the court and GST sites it works on.
The outcome
Coba removes the captcha step from routine court portal lookups, so people who search case records all day spend that time on the case instead.
